I didn’t get photo’s of Dianne’s pass, I was running the video camera and caught her prep, departure and finish on that. Dianne really enjoyed her fist run at 133.358 mph. She was grinning ear to ear when she finally stopped the car. I say finally because the return road is only marked by a couple of orange cones, Dianne didn’t spot them and went about 3/4 mile beyond the road to stop. When she got out of 1149 among her first words were “where are we?” :)
Next up was my C license run, This trip I’d be required to run over 150 and under 175.

Mom and I prior to my C run.

The C run was much more fun than the D, because of the higher speed. I got to stay into the accelerator longer this time, and went through the 2-1/4 trap at 169.902 about 20 mph below what 1149 hit’s that trap at during a serious run. This run 1149 felt even better than the last, the truck is much more comfortable when under acceleration than when feathering it along at lower speeds. My timed mile (2 to 3) was 166.6 mph and only having to feather the throttle for the last ¾ mile made for a much nicer ride.
I pulled the chute this time and turned out just past the 4 mile mark, running much quicker and more comfortably than before.
I rolled over to the return road and was able to spot the pickup crew waiting for me, so I rolled right up by them towing the chute.

You can see quite a difference here in the chute we use on the salt compared to a drag chute.

August 15 2004

Our chute is for stability and slowing, where a drag chute is for stopping.

Monday morning we arrived on the salt and got to work preparing for some serious runs. Dianne and I had each had two runs to collect our D and C licenses, now dad and Ted would go out and see if they could get some serious speed out of 1149.
The first order of business was a tune up and oil change. Here Walter and Bryan go over the data collected during the previous days runs to help them determine the jetting and air bleeds for today’s attempts.

Mean while Marilyn and Rob got breakfast underway. Having a chef in the pit saves the crew a lot of time chasing meals

Lines were long Monday, eventually we got one run in. Ted drove and encountered some handling problems in the last mile this link will take you to a really wide composite image of 1149 as Ted travels between the 4 and 5 mile In at 197 out at 171mph

This looks goofy, but that’s how you read the laptop screen on a bright sunny day on the salt.
August 16 2004
We managed to get 1149 prepped and ready to run before the pits closed at 5 and pushed down to pre-stage, where the car would spend the night. Back at the pit we wrapped things up, expecting another windy night.
