Canadians we met at Speed Week 2003

Canadian Land Speed Racers

There were over 300 entries at Speed Week 2003. The vast majority of the racers are from the USA , but many racers travel from other countries to test themselves and their vehicles on the great white dyno. This year we met crews from many countries including New Zealand, Australia &Sweden. North of 49 would like to highlight the other competitors with whom we share our home country, so presented here are some of the Canadian crews we got to meet during the event.

Gary Weldon 's "Worlds fastest nailhead in an early roadster"  from Millgrove, Ontario.  AKA Waterdown Swapmeet Speedster.
Gary pitted beside us this year, it was great to have him as a neighbor and be able to visit a little more often.

Mike McCrimmon (at work in the foreground) along with Jim Clifford and Ron Hall came down from Red Deer, Alberta with their Modified Mini Pickup running an F motor (injected 2.3 liter Ford), and also pitted along side us.   Nanook’s (269) Wednesday pass at 97.034 was their best of the week. This year was their first trip to the salt with that vehicle.  A couple guys on their team were involved with a record setting diesel a couple years ago.

Scott Beairsto from Innisfail Alberta, 1.5 litre Suzuki .
Scott made one heck of a pile of passes before dropping a piston at over 200 MPH,  An awesome racer and heck of a nice guy.  He also pitted in our little Canadian group.

My 2nd favorite picture of our car this year. Taken over the shoulder of Jeffrey Conger while he was shooting. Those of you who saw the Watson/Weldon feature in Rod & Custom a couple years ago are familiar with Jeffrey's work.

1150 Motorcycle Streamliner from Windsor area. They were pitted in a quieter area well away from us :-) Arrow Racing’s Wednesday run of 201.276 is a best. They ran the streamliner last year , but not in this configuration. Last year was their “shake down” year, the liner looked much more like a cigar tube, and they were wrestling with it quite a bit. In fact they ran ahead of us on the short track last year and the liner flopped over and rolled like a cigar tube down the track. This year they had no problems of that sort. It’s an awesome vehicle, the driver, Gary Hensley, lays prone inside and looks up into a periscope to see where he’s going.
