"North of 49" at Speed Week 2002

small logo

Sunday, 11 August

"Fueling Around"
Sunday morning, at the fuel truck. Our first refill told us that the car had only used a single gallon of gas on Saturday's run. 4 MPG, great!
The blanket taped to the front of "North of 49" is there to keep salt out of the air intake when we towed the car to the staging area. Lack of fenders on the tow vehicle made for a cool but messy trip.

Don Siewert got Sundays first run, shown here in the staging lane prior to his "D" license run.

3 mile trap, 141.190 mph

That red bar, in the lower portion of the grill is the front cross member

Sunday in the pit, Mickey Ellis and his roadster pickup are framed by a few of the rods parked in the area. (Don Siewert's highboy, Don Palfreyman's coupe and John Radermacher's sedan)

Mean while the crew works at staying cool....

Two runs, time for a check-up.

The inside of the engine proved to be cleaner than the outside. The Gilmour built 427 needed "little to none" in the way of adjustments during the week. Oil changes and valve lash check were the extent of our work.

There's nothing quite like working on your car while the Phoenix blasts by. All work has to stop for a moment.

The view from the return road, Sunday afternoon, about
midway between 2 and 3 mile.

Listen to Ted going by. Your vantage point is the mile 3 on the return road, you're standing in the hot sun beside the timing slip pick-up tent

The car first appears coming over the horizon as a speck trailing a "rooster tail" of salt.

Passing through the 2 mile marker

Dug in. Engine at full song, the rooster tail subsides in the 3rd mile.

...and out to the shutdown mile.
